Less is more

This simple but very survival movie about a man stuck on a sinking boat is very engrossing and watchable. Who needs grand over blown special effects and fake CGI when you have a good story - it holds attention from beginning to end.

Direction is good - you can almost feel the heat, thirst, waves etc that have to be endured.

Would liked to have a bit more before and after about how he got out there and after being rescued.

Feel for the elderly Redford getting all wet and filming this movie must have been physically demanding.

Good and quite memorable.

Exemplary lost-at-sea story

ALL IS LOST is an exemplary lost-at-sea story that features a winning performance from the intensely likeable Robert Redford, delivering the goods in a virtually dialogue-free performance. It's just him in a boat, struggling to survive against everything nature throws at him, and yet there's never a dull moment or indeed a slow one. A combination of winning direction and fine acting elevate this film to the status of a mini-classic, and it's far ahead of bigger budget rivals like LIFE OF PI which resort to CGI and clever-clever storytelling to work. ALL IS LOST begins the conflict in the very first second and carries on right until the end. The realism is incredibly high, the drama endless, and the viewer is caught up from the get go. A great film.

Impressive one-man-show

"All Is Lost" is writer-director J.C. Chandor's second full feature film project after the very-well received "Margin Call". We see nobody other than Robert Redford's character for the whole movie and also he hardly ever talks (which is fitting as there is nobody to talk to) and we do not find out his name. He is credited fittingly as "Our Man", which makes us feel more for him and hope he can find a way to save himself. Certainly, this one-man-show can be mentioned together with other greats such as the 1970's "Give 'em Hell, Harry!" starring James Whitmore as Harry S. Truman, even if Redford missed out on the Oscar nomination.

The film starts with the collision. A man is alone on a boat that is slowly about to sink. Unfortunately, I have to say I was not too impressed with the first half of the movie. To me, it was unclear what exactly he was doing in his fight for survival. However, people more interested in technology or even those who have their own boat, probably would enjoy this a lot more than I did. And because of that, it was also pretty difficult to feel for the character. The second half, however, when Redford's character is in that little rubber boat really won me over. As his fight becomes more desperate, the viewing experience becomes more and more intense. Thumbs up for Redford here, who gives a truly physical performance, which is even more impressive considering he is a man in his mid-70s now, maybe the equivalent to Sandra Bullock's recent turn in "Gravity". Great job from him.

Aside from the performance, the camera work and music is masterful as well. When we see him moving towards that massive thunderstorm in his little boat, I had goosebumps and was all like "oh damn it this is gonna be painful". There is also many scenes which offer room for discussion. For example who knows if these two huge ships (that he fires signal rockets at) were real or just existed in his imagination from lack of food. I also liked the scene where we see a fish showing up under him and the course of nature with another fish appearing.

The ending is spectacular and we see one hand grabbing another moments after our man is about to drown. Was it really a savior, another human. Or was it a more spiritual situation. I felt that the narrator very early in the film sounded a lot as if catastrophe was about to happen and the title of the film sounds the same. It is all open to interpretation and I thought it was a very smart move to end this film. Perfect moment for the credits to roll in. Moments before, we see his rubber boat being destroyed and again the effects and camera work are extraordinary. His last haven needs to be destroyed so he can be rescued. It could all have become a bit kitsch, but it did not at all. I personally did believe he was saved by another human when I watched the two hands meeting and did not consider any other option, but reading and thinking about afterward, it makes sense too, especially looking at how far down he already drowned.

So for me, the film started not so great, but became better and better as it moved on and finished with a shot that had me on the edge of my seat. Another ending I would have liked could have been a less showy one with the camera just moving away from him as he is there alone on his boat, maybe with us seeing another ship approaching him, so we have an open ending as well, but of course, as you may have recognized, I also really approve of the one Chandor picked.

Finally I would like to say that I recommend this film. It certainly is different to most other films these days and I hope Chandor keeps up the good work in his next projects. He is still very young and there might be many quality films from him in the future. Another good thing about this one is that due to the lack of dialog you don't need to be an English native speaker or watch a version with horrible dubbing to understand and feel this quality piece of movie-making.
