A feast it is

You may recognize some of the people on screen here, from TV roles or from other movies. Henry Rollins a genre veteran and others that is. But what really counts, are the characters they're portraying. Of course you're not going to get 3-dimensional here, but that's something you couldn't expect from the movie. What you can expect though, is a really nice story, some cool one-liners and some pretty funny ideas. One of them being the introduction of the characters. I loved that bit and was bummed when they ditched it in part 2.

If you can restrict yourself, do not watch the trailer, there is a massive (early) spoiler in there. And one that is really on the nose. Other than that, if you like a good b-movie that is out there (no pun intended), you will love this. The follow ups were not as good, but at least tried to follow the pace this set

American ( B+ Movie ) My Ratings 8/10

A send up of the old school Gory monster movie, that is absolutely amazing and an utter surprise. If you like the genre, you'll truly enjoy this flick

Childish and lazy fare

Oh dear. This cheap and cheerful rubbery monster movie gets on with its story right away; there's no waiting around for exposition or set-up as the action begins from the outset. Unfortunately, the ensuing action is anything but fun. Instead it's silly, sometimes downright stupid, often completely clichéd and always utterly predictable. This is the same type of 'survivors under siege' scenario that Hollywood's been churning out since, well, forever, and there's absolutely nothing you haven't seen before aside from some truly grotesque humour.

The film lost me early on with the ridiculous character introductions, obviously created by a couple of writers who think they're hip and modern when in fact they're merely 'try hards'. The characters are dumb and offensive, and after that quick introduction there's zero plot development that hasn't already taken place in previous 'siege' flicks like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. The rubbery monsters are anything but scary and John Gulager (son of RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD's Clu) displays little ability other than aiming for the lowest common denominator every time.

What's amazing is that there are actually recognisable actors here, not least Clu Gulager as the bartender. TV actor Balthazar Getty bags a leading role, cult star Jason Mewes has a brief cameo and Henry Rollins (WRONG TURN 2) plays an objectionable character. None of them can do much with the stock dialogue they're handed and still less their one-dimensional types which must have looked one-dimensional on page, let alone screen. Unbelievably, two sequels followed, while Gulager and his writing team progressed to making PIRANHA 3DD. I can't say I'm in a hurry to watch any of those
