Another hit and miss in modern horror.

The movie is entertaining in a way. Only the M3gan robot is not scary or menacing enough for me to feel the dread of her presence. It even made it look comical, when she started dancing before attacking, or crawling with her waist torn apart, during the last confrontation. They also tried a more psychological approach on the script, with the heroine's desire to become the perfect surrogate parent to her niece. After hers died in a car accident. But that subplot never went anywhere noticeable either, just like the satire did, after its first failed attempt. As far as I was concerned, I saw the movie as a sci-fi flick, and felt completely detached by its horror aspect. Which made it more disappointing than expected. The cast was fine though, and I'm glad to see Allison Williams getting gigs in the genre. She really was the most promising cast members of the « Girls » series, and gives honor to her scream queen status each time. But where has the fright gone?

Not scary, not interesting

'I watched m3gan expecting a decent horror movie or one with some ideas, given the fairly positive reviews by both critics and audiences. But I was sorely disappointed. The premise is cliché and unoriginal: an AI robot that goes rogue and terrorizes its creators. The film can't decide whether it want to satirize corporate greed or portray how easy it is for humans to become attached. Yet, the movie fails to deliver any meaningful commentary on the ethics of AI, the dangers of corporate greed, or the psychology of loneliness. The characters are bland and forgettable, the dialogue is cheesy and cringeworthy, and the plot is full of holes and inconsistencies. The movie is neither scary nor funny, neither smart nor entertaining.

Toned down to PG-13 so teens can watch

M3gan is another example of a movie that was originally meant to be rated R, absolutely should be rated R, but is toned down to PG-13 so they can sell more tickets. Instead of focusing on making something awesome for real movie fans, something people will talk about for years, they focus on the casuals and teens (there were even a few children at my viewing). I continue to ask, when are studios going to stop being cowards and have the courage to go all out?

Unfortunately that's far from the only problem with M3gan. My biggest complaint is it feels like such a tease. Part of the reason is the aforementioned limitations which doesn't allow you to be creative with or even show the kills. The other reason is that this movie takes FOREVER to get going. And every time I think, okay here we go, it steps back and makes me wait longer. It's not a long movie, and I don't have a short attention span. I just wanted it to go crazy and it never really did.

Other than that, this is just a mediocre movie. I love a good blend of horror and comedy, but the comedy barely made me laugh, and the horror is barely that. With the exception of a solid performance by the main child, I found the rest of the acting to be serviceable at best.

If you're like me and feel like this barely scratched an itch, watch Malignant. Oh, it scratches. (1 viewing, opening Thursday 1/5/2023)
