Likeable Movie that Illustrates the Determination of Maria

I liked this movie as it shows row a woman has to persist at what she wants in a world dominated by control freak chauvinist men. Start with a pedophile first husband who looked to be in his 30's while stalking a teenager who was out of her league at that point in her life when it came to good judgement.

This movie also shows her strength when her childhood friend Mike came back into her life when she moved to New York city and traveled down the same controlling road of her first husband to which she had the scene in the club where she met the producer and Mike forcefully grabbed her arm and slapped her.

No doubt there will be negative reviews from certain segments of society who get offended when faced with the reality of misogyny and a woman strong enough to fight back.

Even her second husband who she was a out to divorce prior to her untimely death possessed the same old world controlling instincts which I see is quite dominate in foreign and domestic films where women are treated as possessions owned by the father until he passes ownership to the husband.

Low budget film with an appaling script

This is a low budget film that tries to depict the life of Maria Montez. The acting is wooden and amateurish, the camera work poor and the script a very childishly written one. The scenes appear to be vignettes from either oral history or someone's recollections, woven together to create a very weak tapestry for a story. It just does not engage. Maybe it does better with a "hometown" audience, but offers little in the way of global appeal. It's difficult to know whether this is based on well researched facts or just hearsay. The latter seems to be the more probable method! Woven into the badly written script is a little native culture that refers to Afro-Caribbean deities etc. It's just not a well made film!

Sweet and interesting look at Maria's life.

Celine's looked beautiful in this movie. Yes, it's low budget so it's doesn't have all the the perks the mega million dollars counterparts might have, but it told a story. One about dreamer from a small island. If it wasn't for movies like this we would miss many important stories that haven't gotten to the big leagues

. They are important and this one was interesting and did just that tell a story. One of how Maria gets out of Barahona. Her dad a divorcee from Spain, her mom from DR, and her mind in dreams of becoming an actress. Like all dreamers things don't go her way...but for the rest you have to watch it.
