Plot summary

Uta — the most beloved singer in the world. Her voice, which she sings with while concealing her true identity, has been described as “otherworldly.” She will appear in public for the first time at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans — excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance — the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound.

What a mess....

I was really looking forward to a Shanks movie and when One Piece Red was announce I was really excited to watch it! Unfortunately it was really disappointing and did not live up to the hype in any way.

I want to make one thing clear, I have nothing against the musical approach of this movie, the songs are actually really good! My main issues are how much an already weak story was rushed just so they can include as many one piece characters as possible and, because of the inclusion of all those characters, the mess that happened later in the movie where they tried to show off every single attack of all those characters.

Uta the "daughter" of Shanks causes an incident to a music nation and in order to protect her feelings Shanks takes the blame, abandons her there which causes here to hate him and pirates in general. She feels so much anger and hate towards them and pirates in general that she creates a virtual world with her powers to kidnap and keep safe thousands of people. We only find out towards the end that she already knew what really happened from a video snail which doesn't makes sense at all considering how much hate she felt towards the Shanks pirates during the whole movie....

Shanks appeared everywhere in the trailers but I guess it was a classic marketing scam to get you to think it's a movie about shanks since he only appeared towards the end and boy what a disappointment... Seeing his face all blooded after ordinary people in the audience punched him was a shock of disbelief. Then during his fight scene you don't feel like he is as strong as he is being hyped to be in the manga. Only his haki moment shows that he is on a different level.

This movie also masters a trend that has started with the previous two movies and after only a few minutes in, there are fights happening all over the place... The future-sight master, fifth emperor Luffy is casually taken out by two buckets of salt water thrown at him by ordinary people which makes me wonder why they didn't try this on Kaido and finish the Wano arc after a few chapters.

Meanwhile Luffy apparently forgets how to use Haki until the last few minutes of the movie but god Ussop casually uses future-sight. During the last attack something different is happening with Luffy (Manga readers you know what I mean) which shouldn't be possible according to the explanation in the manga unless certain parameters where met.

The navy is simply there for decoration... They used all their power against whitebeard, but for Shanks, 30 ships and 2 admirals should do. I guess the 3rd admiral, the CP0 and the rest 70 ships were too busy for a world class threat.

The rest was just plain old copy/paste moments/character quotes from the anime, such as the Kizaru - Beckman situation or Fujitora's exact same quotes etc. Etc. Which are simply boring and bring nothing to the table. The animation apart from a few moments felt subpar and there were many times I thought to myself that there are anime episodes with much better animation overall...

Watch this movie if you have nothing else to watch, but I simply cannot recommend it. This is a very generous 4 for the soundtrack and some visuals I liked but I cannot rate it more than that. One Piece has standards, especially when it comes to captivating stories, it's not about mindless brawls and this movie misses the point entirely.

Omo na just fight and song full am

Talk about what i don't know, why did echiro put up with this to begin with, honestly am not a dedicated fan of the one piece franchise but along the way I've seen what it means and more over, now the new turn was with music i get it it wasn't bad to see something of change different but based on the same concept of was captivating at first but then more tunes followed which became more annoying, if i wanted barbie then I'd watch barbie now this was just something entirely different from the other side of one piece, i tried to see you the end but i don't think an going back for a reason vroom baby am gone with disappoinment. Maybe in the near future i could change my mind but now no way for this movie wey dem do na vex i don dey vex sef.

Frightening and Fantastical (Spoiler Free)

One Piece Film: Red is a fantastical welcome addition to the One Piece Film series.

What I felt lacking from the previous film entry (Stampede) is addressed here properly and I think this film also takes a lot of notes from One Piece Film: Z. I also found that this is probably the most "new-to-One Piece" accessible since Film Gold, requiring little for a new person to comprehend without requiring a huge history of the franchise.

The pacing of the film is energetic, driven by the emotional core of the film in Uta. It is incredibly refreshing to see an emotional driven and well written (female!) character run the plot of the film. Uta's unique powers combined with actual musical scores adds a layer to the film solely unique and allows the film to stand out among the others.

Luffy and company are put in reaction mode for most of the movie, which is really the only fault of the film I have. It's fine whenever Uta strongly drives the plot along, but other side characters show up either for convenience or exposition fairly frequently. The Strawhat crew get to showcase their flashy attacks, but there's only a few brief moments where they get to use their personality to shine (I'd say Usopp and Sanji in particular stand out in key moments, and it's unfortunate Jinbe doesn't have anything key for him to do in his first film appearance.)

I do however appreciate how strongly Luffy plays off Uta and establishes a foil to Luffy that isn't some random stranger he meets once. Luffy and Uta's character beliefs are played perfectly around their idolization of Shanks. It is phenomenal that Shanks & his company are given an actual visual highlight in film to showcase exactly why Shanks is an Emperor and Roger's legacy.

Lastly, the CGI effects are bright and intentionally cartoony for great effect. The use of color to set mood is vastly important. CGI used especially within the film's finale is overwhelming but thankfully not ugly or distracting from the action taking place (again unlike Stampede). The final conflict has masterful use of animation to deliver an amazing finish.

I feel a lot of the unfavorable reviews missed the point: The antagonist isn't so much the character, but rather complex and conflicting emotions driving this individual to commit to a cause without comprehending their actions. Reviewers who go in expecting a low-emotional stakes Shonen will be sorely confused. One Piece has always been held up significantly more by the emotional investments of is characters, rather than it's combat. I honestly prefer this film OVER Film Z in terms of how to make an antagonist that earns their sympathy while also still being threatening.
