'Orphan' was an amazing film, with a twist I hadn't seen coming. Following that, I had hopes that this prequel might be half way decent. How wrong I was!
For a start, it was filmed far too late (12 years or so) as the actress playing Esther is much too old and any attempt to make the actress look so young was futile. Had they have filmed the prequel following Orphan's success, it would have been so much better.
There is an interesting plot twist which I applaud, and Julia Stiles is brilliant as the mother. However, even Julia Stiles cannot resurrect a duff film.
Don't waste your time on such a daft film...

Stupidity instead of writing...thinking people should avoid
Anyone expecting any sort of logic should skip.
The level of stupidity for this movie to happen is just off the charts..
1. Someone in a mental institution who just tried to kill someone, would not be allowed to roam free LITERALLY five minutes later in a room full of potential weapons. I had to stop the movie to go back to ensure I did not miss something like 'four years later'. She just tried to kill someone and the next scene she is roaming around with everyone. I was almost done right then.
2. Except, when she escapes after killing two people AND she is seen getting into a car in parking lot.... NO ONE, NO ONE, NO ONE thinks to ...I don't know....check the cars?
The movie is predicated on each person making the most stupid decision. No security on the killing maniac, checked. Therapist not checking her car AFTER seeing maniac get into her car...checked. Managers, officers, orderlies all being completely inept at their jobs, checked. People walking down dark hallways, alleys by themselves, KNOWING there is a killer nearby and not even turning on the light, checked.
Orphan: First Kill
A prequel to the 2009 thriller 'Orphan'. Esther, (Isabelle Fuhrman) thirty year old psycho who looks like a child, escapes from an asylum in Estonia and pretends to be the missing child of a wealthy Connecticut family. She is welcomed and adored, but things don't go to plan for long.
Entertaining follow up to Orphan, which benefits from having the excellent Julia Stiles as the mother defending her family from the nasty Esther, but also from a fun twist about an hour into proceedings. The twist sets things on a slightly different and enjoyable path, but the makers don't seem to know what to do with it and revert to type in a great big not very surprising, but well made, climax. Not bad - no doubt no 3 will follow.
